The Prison Department expended $9,355 more than was anticipated mostly on account of increased staff and the opening of the new Halls at Lai Chi Kok.
Savings in the Medical Department amounting to 891,966 were achieved by deferring expenditure on the equipment for Victoria Maternity and Kowloon Hospitals, construction of a motor launch and ininor economies on a number of items.
The Sanitary Department's requirements fell short of the estimate by $184,650 principally due to savings on salaries and special expenditure earmarked for exhumations.
Fewer Building Grants and savings on salaries were chiefly responsible for the saving of $128,468 in the estimate for the Education Department.
Public Works Department showed a saving of $150,948 almost wholly due to lapsing salaries and allowances.
Excess expenditure ander Public Works Recurrent was in- curred to the extent of $243,981 - notable increases being :-

Military Expenditure exceeded the estimate by $92,436 owing to increased revenue and increase in the strength of the Volunteer Defence Corps.
Savings were effected in the Harbour Master's Department to the extent of $372,938. This was accomplished by abandoning the construction of two Patrol launches and equipment estimated to cost $316,000 and by minor savings on the majority of the other items.
The Imports and Exports Department showed a decrease in expenditure of $173,266. Savings on most of the items contri- bated to this result and a reduction in the quantity of raw opinm purchased accounted for $125,045 of the total decrease.
A decrease in the Police Department Expenditure of $70,614 was mainly owing to the non-completion of the New Cruising launch and to Lapsing Salaries.
The Fire Brigade Estimates ware exceeded by $59,195. Expenditure of $107,360 for the construction of a new fire float was not foreseen when the estimates were framed as it had been
